1. Refereeing to highland rape, rape is a horrific act, why are magazines allowed to romanticize it and put it in advertisements?

McQueen’s fifth collection was called Highland Rape, the show was called ‘aggressive and disturbing’ by Women’s Wear Daily. Models have blood splattered over themselves and they appeared wild and distraught. McQueen said, “I’d studied the history of the Scottish upheavals and the Clearances . . . Highland Rape was about England’s rape of Scotland” (202). Magazines are allowed to romanticize it and put it in advertisements is because McQueen used the word as a form of art. He is a fashion designer and did not intend to use the work ‘rape’ as what it really means. McQueen expresses his ideas through fashion. Either the media will love it or hate but not everyone thinks the same as the press. We all have our own opinions about fashion and what seems fashionable or not.

2. Is it possible for clothing to provide the type of protection McQueen try’s to creative by making women look “so powerful no one would dare lay hands on them?

McQueen’s collection, Dante, had images of a woman so powerfully sexual that no one would dare to lay hands on her, a woman who used her sexuality as a sword rather than a shield, also drew on an earlier, and more dissident, representation than the fin-de-siècle vamp or her early twentieth-century cinematic successor (207). McQueen collections defiantly make a statement to people and I think men would be afraid to approach women who are dressed like that. They do seem powerful but it might also give the wrong impression to men as they do not want to be approached. Maybe women might think he’s collection down the runway is wearable like the piece that covers your whole face. People might give you a weird look if you were to wear that walking around a busy city.

3. Are the opinions of the viewer or designer a more correct interpretation fashion?

In fashion everyone has their own opinion of what is the “correct interpretation to fashion is. “According to Caroline Evans in Desire and Dread: Alexander McQueen and the Contemporary Femme Fatale, “The review spoke of violence and abuse, but not of the historical eclecticism which also permeated the show” (201). Just like his collection, Highland Rape, the press described it as ‘aggressive and disturbing’ (202). McQueen said Highland Rape was about England’s rape of Scotland (202). Everyone has their own opinion of fashion and the correct interpretation is what you think but also to consider the fashion designer since they were the one to come out with the collection. Fashion and art has no right and wrong answer and just as long you have an opinion and can make sure you can back up opinion, which is all that matters.

4.Why is it appealing to sexualize or eroticise fashion?

I always heard the phrase, “sex sells” they use that phrase to draw interest for people to look at products that companies are selling. They use the term femme fatale, the woman whose sexuality was dangerous, even deathly, and for whom, therefore, male desire would always be tinged with dread (204). They compare femme fatale to a black widow, a woman who is so seductive and leads her “prey” to her. They want to attract people into buying their products by putting “beautiful” people to advertise it. They want people to say “I want to look like that when I buy the dress she is wearing.” Usually when they put beautiful people into an ad, that person has no connection to what they are selling. That is how they get people to buy their things.

Reading #5

1. What are the three cardinal attributes to define the sociologic phenomenon of fashion?   Provide a definition in your own words, based on what you read of each attribute.

The three cardinal attributes that are suggested by Thomas Schierer are temporal, social and material aspects (160).

The first attribute is temporal aspect. To me, I see temporal as temporary and temporary does not last forever especially in fashion. Fashion always comes and goes and it says in the media for a minimal time. 80’s fashion is always continues coming back and not just 80’s fashion but certain trends as well.

ImageThe second attribute is social aspect. To me, social aspects are how one expresses themselves through social situations. School is a social interaction and how one dresses can give off vibes to people. Depending on how someone looks that is the vibe that someone will get. A person wearing light colors might be more approachable than someone wearing dark colors.

ImageThe third attribute is material aspect. To me, material aspects means that fashion needs other materials to be complete. Clothes need to be paired with shoes, accessories such as, jewelry, hair pieces, a scarf, and other things. Hair is also an important material aspect for fashion.

2. What does it mean, “Fashion is Play” How do you play at fashion?  Provide examples, and images.

In the reading, Fashion, Lifestyle and Psychiatry, “Fashion is Play” according to Johannes B. Torello, he emphasize that fashion is necessary play, and as such it should be integrated into personal life (163). Fashion should not be taking seriously, fashion should be fun. You can experiment so much with fashion like try some clothes you normally wouldn’t think of wearing. Who knows, you might end up liking it. Fashion lets us express who we are and you can express yourself with fashion. I guess I play at fashion by turning something into pink. I always wanted a denim pink jacket and I could not find one for the longest. So I ended buying a white one and dyeing it pink. I also loved these shoes that I saw at the store. They were a brown color I believe. I really wanted them so I decided to paint them pink. I also have died my hair different colors than my natural. I dyed my hair once blond and then I added pink to the ends of my hair.

3. Define the Histrionic Attitude and Schizoid Attitude towards Fashion.  Provide examples from your own experience.

In the reading, Fashion, Lifestyle and Psychiatry, Histrionic Attitude and Schizoid Attitude towards Fashion are defined as “One gives fashion too much attention, and the other condemns it (166).

People with Histrionic Attitude depend on the opinion of others. They put a lot of effort to be fashionable. When someone depends the opinions of others, they like to feed of that. Someone may not feel good about themselves but they need those opinions from others to feel good about themselves. I feel like they are kind of people pleasers.

Image

People with Schizoid Attitude  do not care about the opinion of other people. These people do not care how they look or dress. A person with schizoid personality disorder likes to be alone and do not care if they are popular. I think people can have both attitudes towards fashion.

Image

I think I am both attitudes. I do not care the opinion of what other people have about me but I like to put an effort into what I wear but it is not for people it is for myself. I always knew I will be judged no matter what I wore and I just choose to ignore what people have to say about me if it is a negative comment. I do appreciate when someone gives me a compliment but I do not depend based on what someone has told me. Even though my style may seem like I’m craving for attention, I am not. I love to wear pink but I guess it comes with a price because I “stand out” and I am not doing it on purpose. Sometimes I wish I didn’t stand out so people can just let me be myself. I do feel uncomfortable sometimes by the way people make me feel but it hasn’t changed me.

Alter Identity Proposal

12 Nov

Thinking about my alter identity project I know I wanted to do something that does not revolve me wearing pink. I was thinking about going towards something completely opposite of me. Since I wear pink everyday, I wanted to do something different. It took me awhile to realized what I wanted to do because I did not know how I was going get the clothes I needed. My alter identity is going to be me dressing in black. I want to dress in black but also in a professional way. What inspired me to choose my alter identity is my mom. My mom works as a Realtor and works in an office. She always looks professional and she always wears black. What also inspired was how in class Professor Lung told me when I grow up people might not respect me because of the color pink. (I hope I said it right.)

I always wanted to work at Victoria’s Secret because that is one of my favorite store but I don’t I ever will considering they are always wearing black. I do work in an office and I can wear whatever I want. Although it is not professional for me to wear a Hello Kitty or Barbie shirt to work, I have to admit that I have. To execute this alter identity I am going to ask my mom if I can borrow some of her clothes. I am going to ask her how she goes to work on a daily basis and how she dresses when she meets clients. She always heels to work (I probably will not be wearing heels) but maybe flats. I want to dress like this when I go to work. I want to know if my coworkers will take me more seriously if i’m dressed professionally and also in black. I also want to go to school like this and hang out with my family and friend. I might not always dress professional but definitely wearing black. I might dress more casual going to school. If I hang out with my friends I still want to wear black. Even though my inspiration came from my mom I still want to look like around my age.
